Reading Edgar Allan Poe's "Lenore" Editor's Note! LISTEN WITH Headphones for *BEST* Experience! About the Author & Poem Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American writer best known for his poetry and short fiction exploring themes of beauty, loss, and the gothic. Lenore, published in 1843, is a dramatic poem spoken over the coffin of a young woman, in which a grieving lover, Guy de Vere, rejects the false mourners around him and refuses to grieve as they do. It is a meditation on loss, hypocrisy, and the defiant love that outlasts death itself.
